Martin Freeman will now be co-starring alongside Billy Bob Thornton in the miniseries Fargo, based on the 1996 film of the same name. The film’s original directions, Joel and Ethan Coen, will serve as executive producers on the upcoming series.

Freeman will be playing the role of Lester Nygaard, an insurance salesman whose life is turned around a mysterious stranger, Lorne Malvo (Thornton), suddenly appears. The role of Lester will be very similar to the character played by William H. Macy in the film, but the events in the television series will differ from the events in the film.

FX president John Landgraf told Deadline about the adaptation, “It’s hard to describe how remarkably true to the film it is. I think people are going to be entranced with that show. [Noah Hawley’s] invented a new version of Fargo that’s its own thing, but that’s true to the spirit of the original.”
