Fame and all the publicity that comes with it can be terrifying for anyone, but for Daryl Hannah it was too much after an autism diagnosis as a child.
When Hannah moved to Los Angeles at 17, she wanted to get away from the kids that ostracized her, but couldn’t do talk shows or attend her own movie premieres. “Not because I was above it,” she told People, “but because I was terrified. I’ve never been comfortable being the center of attention, it’s always freaked me out.”
That feeling caused the now 52 year-old to drop her A-list star status, “[I’m] definitely not being offered the greatest roles in the world,” she confessed, but she’s fine with that as she has become more focused on environmental activism. She’s even been arrested a few times, in 2012 when she protested the construction of an oil pipeline that was supposed to bring crude oil from Canada to the Gulf Coast.
The Kill Bill star now lives in a rural area outside of Los Angeles, drives a truck that runs on French fry grease, and takes care of her rescued pet pig Molly. When interviewed by People, a friend said that when Hannah “feels passionate about something, she loses all her fears.”
You can see Hannah in The Hot Flashes on DVD now.
