October Brings A Bundle of The Hobbit Treats

Fans of The Hobbit have been given a lovely little gift for this first day of October… the premiere of the latest trailer for the second film in the trilogy, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

Picking up from last year’s hit, An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug sees Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) continue his journey with the dwarves and Gandalf (Ian McKellen) in their attempt to recover the dwarves’ gold from Smaug, the dragon (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch).

As with most trilogy middle films, The Desolation of Smaug is set to be a darker movie than the first. Director Peter Jackson has said, “Some pretty serious stuff is going down and it is important that we don’t undercut that now.” This certainly shows in the newly released trailer where we get a mixture of everything we’ve come to know and love about Jackson’s Tolkien adaptations. Interestingly, though not part of the original The Hobbit novel, we get quite a decent look at some Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly) and Legolas (Orlando Bloom) interactions. We also get a feel of the power and fury of Smaug.

To introduce the trailer, Bloom was joined by McKellen on the TODAY show this morning. McKellen summed up the trailer by saying, “there’s lots of action” and he’s certainly not wrong.

In addition to the trailer and the TODAY publicity spot, a new banner for the film was also released today. The artwork features Lilly and Bloom showing off their archery skills.
