Great news to people in the 75 countries this will occur, we’ve received confirmation that the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary episode will broadcast simultaneously around the world. That’s right; the ‘Day of the Doctor’ will be simulcasting this November 23rd as per this press release.
Starring Matt Smith, David Tennant, Jenna Coleman with Billie Piper and John Hurt, the feature-length ‘Day of the Doctor’ episode will be enjoyed by fans around the world in the ‘BBC Worldwide global simulcast and cinema extravaganza’. From ‘Canada to Colombia, Brazil to Botswana and Myanmar to Mexico’ fans can see the episode in 2D and 3D (subject to availability) on 23 November 2013, at the same time as the BBC One UK broadcast, which will be the 24th for countries on the other side of the world.
CEO of BBC Worldwide Tim Davie, said that few TV shows can still lay claim to being appointment viewing and that Doctor Who takes this to another level. “In its 50th anniversary year we wanted to create a truly international event for Doctor Who fans in as many countries as possible and the simultaneous broadcast and cinema screening of the special across so many countries will make for a fitting birthday tribute to our Time Lord.”
“The Doctor has always been a time traveller – now he’s travelling time zones,” says showrunner, Steven Moffat. “On the 23rd of November, it won’t be the bad guys conquering the Earth – everywhere it will be The Day of the Doctor!” I imagine the top twitter trending topics for the 23rd-24th of November will include the following, #SaveTheDay, #DoctorWho or #DayoftheDoctor. #SaveTheDay being the official celebratory hashtag for the episode as per the two teaser trailers released last Saturday.
At this moment New Zealand fans should be hounding Prime TV and/or UK TV who are the primary broadcasters of the show. Any countries where Doctor Who airs that are not listed should question their providers. The list of countries, which doesn’t include New Zealand (C’mon free-to-air Prime TV/UK TV on Sky!); can be found in the press release along with an FAQ section. Question your broadcasters and make this is a truly international event, because seriously on the ‘Day of the Doctor’, what could possibly be more important?
