Downton Abbey’s Laura Carmichael, or as she’s known on the show Lady Edith, has joined the cast of the new film, Madame Bovary.
Filmmaker Sophie Barthes’s adaptation of the classic Flaubert novel will star Mia Wasikowska, best known for her role as Alice in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, as Emma Bovary. Carmichael and her Downton costar Paul Giamatti are also on the bill, as well as Ezra Miller (We Need to Talk About Kevin), Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill), Logan Marshall (Prometheus), and Olivier Gourmet (Les Fils).
Madame Bovary tells the story of Emma Bovary, a country girl who falls into financial trouble and marital betrayal, and thus decides to improve her social standing through a great amount of adultery.
Carmichael is cast as Henrietta, who is not named in the book, but it is thought to be based off of Heloise, the first wife of Madame Bovary’s husband Charles.
Madame Bovary is scheduled to be released in 2014.
