Lorde’s done it; she’s topped the US Billboard Hot 100 with her breakthrough hit ‘Royals’ today, overtaking Miley Cyrus’ ‘Wrecking Ball’ after only two weeks at the top spot.
According to Billboard the 16-year old Kiwi, real name Ella Yelich-O’Connor, is the youngest solo artist to be crowned number one since Tiffany, who was 16 years and one month old when “I Think We’re Alone Now” hit number one in the week of Nov. 7, 1987. That’s older than Lorde is right now.
Granted she isn’t the youngest to ever hold the number one spot, the title held by Stevie Wonder who was 13 when ‘Fingertips – Part 2’ went to number one in 1963, or even the youngest girl, which was 15-year old Peggy March with ‘I Will Follow Him’ also in 1963, she’s the youngest Kiwi to hold the title for sure.
However this isn’t the only achievement Lorde’s had this year, as the first woman to top Billboard’s Alternative Songs Chart in 17 years, she’s also set the mark for the longest reign in the 27-year history of the Alternative Songs chart by a lead female. Her seven-week reign beats Alanis Morissette’s ‘You Oughta Know’-reign of five weeks.
Lorde’s album Pure Heroin came out earlier this week, I reviewed it earlier this week, and it’s definitely worth a listen or 50.
