Michael Fassbender Says An Oscar Nod Would Be “Icing On The Cake”

This year is revving up to be quite the big one for Michael Fassbender.

With two very big movies coming out this year in 12 Years a Slave and The Counselor the words Fassbender and Oscars may be heard in correlation more often than not.

In an interview with Sky News at the red carpet for The Counselor, Fassbender said about a possible Oscar nod that,  “everything is bonus from here on out. We’ll see what happens.”

“[The Oscar buzz] is there. I have to see this film, but I’ve seen 12 Years a Slave and it’s beautiful; i’m happy with it. So like I say, anything that comes is extra, gravy, icing on the cake, whatever you want to call it,” Fassbender continued.

If you have taken note of Fassbender’s career you will have noticed a bit of a patter; he seems to play a lot of rather dark characters. In his two latest films he is a heinous slave owner (12 Years a Slave) and an attorney who takes a walk on the wild side – becoming involved in organised crime (The Counselor).

According to Fassbender, it isn’t something he does on purpose:

“I don’t have a litmus test for the darkest role, I just like the script and story, I don’t know why this is happening, it might be time to do a comedy.”

He does have a comedy lined up for release next year called Frank, but he will still be playing darker, misunderstood characters like Magneto in X-Men: Days of Future Past and Macbeth in the Shakespearean tragedy.

The Counselor,  directed by Ridley Scott, will hit theatres on October 25 in the US and on November 15 in the UK. Until then, check out the international trailer below:
