Every year at the BFI London Film Festival Awards, a Fellowship is given in recognition of outstanding work, and this year that award will go to Sir Christopher Lee.
“It is a great privilege to be included amongst such a distinguished group of predecessors who have received this Award from the BFI,” said Lee who met with Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, to celebrate on Monday.
Lee made his film debut in 1948 in the movie Corridor of Mirrors, but became well-known in the 50s when he starred as both Frankenstein’s creature and Dracula.
The 91 year-old is also known for playing Count Dooku in Star Wars: Episode III-Revenge of the Sith and Saruman in The Hobbit. Lee has also worked with Tim Burton on a series of movies including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland, Sleepy Hollow, and Corpse Bride. In 2009, Lee was knighted for his philanthropy and services to acting.
Mayor Johnson sung his praises for Lee saying, “Congratulations to Sir Christopher on being awarded this distinguished accolade for a film career that has been genuinely iconic.”
“As the BFI London Film Festival gets underway, with a wonderful array of films from around the world, it’s a good time to celebrate great British film and film talent,” he continued.
According to BFI Chief Executive Amanda Nevill, “The BFI Fellowship is awarded to those at the pinnacle of their profession. It is a truly illustrious moment to be honouring Sir Christopher Lee for his enormous and unique contribution to film during a Festival that is committed to excellence.”
The actor will be recognized at the festival October 19. Past recipients for the Fellowship include Helena Bonham Carter, husband Tim Burton, and Ralph Fiennes.
