Deadheads, assemble! Walking Dead fans, are you ready? Season Four is almost upon us, and the anticipation is palpable. Last season was such an irresistible thrill-ride that I truly cannot wait to see what they can come up with next.
Norman Reedus, who plays the lovably prickly anti-hero Daryl Dixon, sat down with EW.com and talked about the upcoming season. A season that will be notably absent of some very familiar faces. Last season marked the demise of Andrea (Laurie Holden), T-Dog (IronE Singleton), Merle (Michael Rooker), and Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies); all original cast members.
In place of those original four, fifty new faces will be added to crew. Many of which were adopted after being orphaned from Woodbury after the Governor snapped. Reedus tells us what it’s like to be on a show where the people who have trudged through from the beginning meet their maker.
“I hate it when one of the OGs goes. It really bums me out. It’s taken three seasons for people to get wrapped up in certain characters. I think once you invest in those characters to have those characters go is just like ‘Ah, man.’ I think people are sort of left hanging on a string.”
On welcoming the fresh meat (so-to-speak) into the fold, Reedus said that, “It’s weird to delegate authority to newbies in the group and on set. It’s odd, to be honest. Starting the season, there’s certain techniques that the writers are using to integrate the storylines of other people and it’s interesting.”
Reedus also discusses how trying to build storylines for new characters initially limits scenes that the veterans have together. “I know Andy [Lincoln] going into the first episode was like ‘Man, when are we getting back together? When are we going to kill something? I’m farming. I’m doing pigs. I mean, what the hell?’ And I’m like, ‘Don’t worry, man. It’ll happen.’ And I’m running and yelling at people I don’t really know very well.”
The plus side? The familiarizing we will see on set will be realistic and legitimate. As these characters get to know each other, so will the actors. They will be getting to know each other side-by-side.
“I think the internal fear has always been something hanging in the wind, and who’s gonna f— over who and who can you trust?” the former Prada model explained. “So now having that fear back inside the camp is just as scary as season 1. I like people scared on the show. If everyone’s tough, it seems more manageable. I like the fear in season 1, and I think the fear is back in season 4, which is awesome to see people afraid again. That’s really the dynamic that we’re playing with this whole season so far.”
I’m ready to be scared, are you?! The Season 4 premier will walk onto our screens this Sunday, October 13 on AMC.
