Did New York Comic Con Hijack Attendees Twitter Accounts?

“Welcome to the one and only New York Comic Con” reads the banner that hangs at the annual convention this week. “Where we hijack your social media accounts and shamelessly promote our event,” could be an appropriate tagline this year.

Attendees of the 2013 New York Comic Con seemed very excited Thursday as many of them were tweeting their anticipation for the event; though it turns out, that many of them didn’t actually tweet about it at all.

According to Mashable, “The tweets were tied to attendees’ NYCC badges. This year, conference organizers Reedpop allowed people to pre-register their badges online. The badges have radio-frequency identification (RFID) chips that are tied to a user’s identity in order to curb counterfeits. (RFID chips use radio frequencies to transfer information between the chip and a receiver).”

Once attendees registered their badges online, they had the option to link their social media accounts to it (the badge). I’m going to go out on a limb here and say they weren’t aware that meant NYCC would be tweeting on their behalf and according to Mashable, NYCC never made that “explicitly” clear, either.

As of this posting, NYCC has not commented on the unauthorized tweeting; but stay tuned to PopWrapped and we will keep you up to date with all the latest and greatest!
