Joanna Page May Hold The Key To A Long Standing Feud In Doctor Who’s 50th Anniversary

It was in early April when it was first announced that Joanna Page would be taking part in Doctor Who’s 50th Anniversary special, but what have we heard from her since then? By now we know that the special will be titled “The Day of the Doctor”, but what will Page’s role be, and more importantly, how will that work out in the plot of earlier episodes? Particularly an episode way back in Season 3!

Quite early on rumours began circulating that she was playing Elizabeth I, as she was spotted wearing a dress that could hardly belong to anyone else, but it wasn’t until last week when this was finally confirmed. Quite unnoticed by the general public, Page let slip some information that gave us quite a sneak peak into what will be waiting for us in the 50th Anniversary Special!

“You don’t expect three weeks after giving birth for them to phone and say ‘Will you play Elizabeth I?” she explained when she made an appearance on the ITV chat show Loose Women, giving a very interesting confirmation that went unnoticed by the presenters.

The actress also made reference to her role in the sci fi drama in an interview with Scotland’s Daily Record newspaper.  “The day I auditioned for Breathless, I came home and got a phone call saying they’d really like me for the role. And then an email arrived saying, ‘Oh and also, you’ve just been offered the part of Queen Elizabeth in Doctor Who’s 50th.’ I didn’t even have to audition.”

Not much later, while explaining how she managed to feed her baby without taking a break from her job, she said “One day I was about to get on the back of a horse with David Tennant and James, my husband, drove in in the car with Eva and said ‘She needs feeding’. So I got off the horse, got in the back of the car, ripped open the bodice and Elizabeth I was breast feeding! That’s a working mum for you.”

Excuse me? You were on the back of a horse together with David Tennant? The Tenth Doctor was on a horse together with Elizabeth the First? Well, we here at PopWrapped are very devoted fans, so we definitely remember a scene from the episode “The Shakespeare Code”, where good old Queen Bess was not happy to see the return of David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor.

“What have you done to upset her?” Martha asked while the two of them started running from the guards.

“I don’t know, I haven’t met her yet!” the Doctor replied. “That’s time travel for you! Still, I can’t wait to find out…”

Will the 50th Anniversary actually answer a question that was asked more than 6 years ago? That would be epic, and it would be yet more proof of how mysterious this show can be!

Well not long to wait until we discover just what our favourite time lord did to annoy another British female monarch.

“The Day of the Doctor” will air on BBC1 on November 23rd at 7pm, and thanks to the amazing simulcast Whovians across the world will get to experience this episode together at the same time.
