Ben Wheatley To Direct The First Adventures Of The 12th Doctor

As if the rumors of Matt Smith’s 11th Doctor going down a darker path after his regeneration into Peter Capaldi’s 12th Doctor in the show’s 50th Anniversary special weren’t enough, the director for the first two episodes of Series 8 has been announced, and it’s a pretty edgy one.

Ben Wheatley, director, writer and/or producer of films like Down Terrace, Sightseers, the recent A Field in England, and director in shows like The Wrong Door and Ideal confirmed the news earlier today to ScreenDaily:

“I am very excited and honoured to be asked to direct the first two episodes of the new series of Doctor Who. I’ve been a fan since childhood — Tom Baker is my Doctor if you are asking– […] I’ve been watching the current run of Doctor who with my son and have discovered it all over again. The work that has been done is amazing. I’m really looking forward to working with Peter Capaldi and finding out where Steven Moffat is planning to take the new Doctor.”

He’s currently the most established director ever to take part on the show, and a long list of possible candidates, including Peter Jackson and Edgar Wright may be set to follow in the next years.

Wheatley has gained a firm following thanks to his cult films, so it will be interesting to see the interaction between his fans and the Whovians, as well as how his style blends in with that of Doctor Who and, as he says, find out where Moffat will take the new Doctor and his current companion, Clara Oswald, played by Jenna Louise-Coleman.

The episodes he’ll be taking part in, probably a two-part premiere episode, will be taped through December and into the first weeks of January, they will be aired when the new series premieres on Fall, 2014.
