Armstrong and Crow – did she know? According to a new book, Wheelmen: Lance Armstrong, the Tour de France and the Greatest Sports Conspiracy Ever written by Wall Street reporters Reed Albergotti and Vanessa O’Connell, she did. The authors claim in their work that Sheryl Crow, the ex-fiance of the revered cyclist actually witnessed illegal transfusions taking place.
According to Albergotti’s and O’Connell’s sources, Armstrong was entirely open with his then-fiance about the doping. As reported by Radio.com, Armstrong was completely honest with Crow because he trusted her to not open up to the media, as she understood the rampant use of illegal doping in the sports industry. When Crow was originally subpoenaed to testify in Armstrong’s case, it is rumored that she signed an agreement of protection against prosecution on the grounds that she reveal all the information of which she was aware.
Lance Armstrong and Sheryl Crow split in 2006, but were together for 3 years, including two of his Tour de France victories. The award-winning singer, not without adversity in her own life, battled breast cancer as well as a benign brain tumor in recent years. She is the adoptive mother of two young boys and continues to write and record her own music, including her currently released Feels Like Home.
A September 2012 interview with Katie Couric reveals that Crow still appears to hold affection and empathy for Armstrong. She told Couric that she “felt bad for him and his family” and “he is a hero that we watched and looked up to and admired.” Armstrong’s iconic status as a symbol of overcoming adversity to triumph became tarnished by scandal. It seems as though Crow, regardless of what she was aware of when they were together, still sees the positive influence Armstrong generated with his message of Livestrong.
