Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were the first to know about Sherlock season 4; they knew before Steven Moffat and the BBC commissioners. How is this possible, you ask? They decided it themselves. Obviously.
Steven Moffat, co-producer of the show, told Radio Times, “We had to inform the BBC that Martin and Benedict had commissioned a new series.”
“They signed themselves up. They both announced that they were carrying on –so that’s good.”
When on a red carpet, Cumberbatch said he wished to go on forever, and at a separate event Freeman said, “Yep, series four is happening.”
Technically, Cumberbatch and Freeman don’t have the authority as actors to decide on another season, however Moffat doesn’t think this will be too much of an issue on this occasion.
“The BBC can do what they like,” he said. “They’re massively powerful, don’t provoke them! But I assume that unless we’ve really screwed up Sherlock[series three] – which we haven’t– it’s a big success and it will carry on, so long as Benedict and Martin want to do it.”
Seeing as Sherlockians have been waiting for series 3 for almost two years now, knowing there will be another season succeeding the much anticipated third is incredibly good news. However there is still no official airdate for series 3; it is hopefully to be sometime in 2014.
