Everyone loves The Lion King. Everyone. Adults and children alike all adore the classic Disney tale, and I’m not just talking about the animated feature.

The Lion King on Broadway opened for preview performances 16 years ago on October 15, 1997 and now it is set to become Broadway’s first ever production to gross $1 billion. As of October 6, The Lion King has collected more than $997 million from its New York shows, with the expected 10 figure milestone to be achieved following the week of performances ending October 20.

During it’s time on Broadway, the musical has been extremely consistent in maintaining strong crowds with attendance dropping below 80% less than a dozen times in its entire 16 year run.

Thomas Schumacher, producer and Disney Theatrical Group president said, “This humbling milestone is a testament to the vision and artistry of [director] Julie Taymor.”

Not only will The Lion King become the highest grossing Broadway production in history, in a few weeks time it will also become the fourth longest-running Broadway show, surpassing Les Miserables.
