Stephen Merchant Says An Office UK Revival Is Unlikely

Bad news for UK Office fans – co-creator Stephen Merchant says there’s probably not going to be any sort of revival for the classic TV show. Merchant’s partner in crime, Ricky Gervais, spilled over the summer about his plans to do a David Brent movie – Brent, of course, being his character from The Office. When that news broke, fans began buzzing about the possibility of a movie of the show, but Merchant has squashed such hopes.

On the possibility of such a film, Merchant said, “I haven’t spoken to Ricky about it. I don’t know if it’s just talk or a proper plan. [But] I think if he did do it, it would be David Brent in isolation away from The Office. I don’t think we could open the doors of Wernham Hogg again.”

In fact, if there were to be a movie about David Brent, Merchant says the character would exist in “isolation” from the plot of the TV series.

This goes right along with what Gervais said were his hopes for the character. In an interview with THR, he said he would like for his YouTube series, Learn Guitar With David Brent, to pave the way for a film, wherein the character tries to make it in the music industry.
