Deadline has reported that Academy Award nominated actress Laura Dern has signed on to play Reese Witherspoon’s mother in the upcoming film, Wild.
Wild is the big screen adaptation of Cheryl Strayed’s 2012 memoir that chronicles Strayed’s 1,100-mile hike and journey of self discovery, along the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon, to the border with Washington State.
Devastated by her mother’s death when she was 22, Cheryl dissociated herself from her remaining family and became involved in heroin use leading to the eventual divorce from her husband. At age 26, and with no prior experience, she set off alone to walk the 1,100-mile trail. The novel intertwines stories of her life before embarking on the journey, the physical challenges she faced along the way and the spiritual realisations she discovered during her time on the trail.
The novel has been adapted for the screen by Nick Hornby (Fever Pitch) and will be directed by Jean-Marc Vallée (Dallas Buyers Club).
Filming began earlier this week in Oregon.
