Jessie J is finally opening up at the fatal stabbing that happened at one of her gigs in April 2012.
“I’ve never actually spoken about this. You never expect to have someone lose their life at your show,” Jessie recently said to the travel magazine Time Out.
The singer had already left the Blackberry show, which was held at a London nightclub, when 37-year-old Phillip Sherriff was attacked. 26-year-old Ashley Charles was eventually found guilty of the stabbings, and it currently serving a 14-year sentence for murder.
“I was heartbroken. I’d left the building when it happened, but the thought that the last thing he saw was me singing live? That stuck with me for a long time.”
Jessie also admitted it can be hard to deal with the fans constant scrutiny at times. “I’ve had death threats for cancelling shows!
“With social media, young people use words of hatred so flippantly now. It’s either ‘I LOVE YOU!’ or ‘I HATE YOU AND I WANT YOU TO DIE.’ There’s no middle ground. Everything’s an extreme, because people want to be noticed.”
Fame has never been an easy thing to handle, but we hope nothing like what happened in April 2012 happens to Jessie again.
