Despite underperforming at box offices, the sequel to The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is moving forward. Production on the sequel, based on the Cassandra Clare’s series, was delayed last month due to the film grossing a dismal $80 million worldwide with less than stellar reviews.

Contantin Film, the studio who released City of Bones, has confirmed that production for the sequel will proceed as planned. The film grossing well overseas – it grossed $49 million internationally versus the $31 million in North America – and the positive fan response was the factoring measure in continuing forward with the series. Even with the film grossing well overseas, the film had a budget of $60 million, and another $60 million was reportedly spent on marketing.

Nevertheless, Martin Moszkowicz, Contantin Film’s head of film and television, recently spoke about going forward with the sequel. “The fan response, from the blogosphere and the thousands of mails we have received, has encouraged us to keep going. It’s been overwhelmingly positive, in contrast to some other YA titles.”

Moszkowicz also admits marketing was not the best for City of Bones. “We are analysing what we did wrong with the first film, particularly with the positioning and marketing, and what changes we have to make. We are working with a great group of people to reposition the franchise.

“The readers of Mortal Instruments are older than you might think. That may have been one issue in our marketing, that we focused too much on a very young audience segment.”

The sequel will be titled The Mortal Instruments: The City of Ashes. Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Kevin Zegers, Robert Sheehan, Jemina West, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Sigourney Weaver are set to star in the film.
