Halloween is approaching soon, and we have seen many celebrities dress up as their favorite characters from popular film and TV shows, including Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones. However, Julianne Hough stirred up some controversy over the weekend with her Orange is the New Black costume.
OITNB, a dramedy set in a women’s federal prison, had a hit first season on Netflix and Hough (along with some of her friends) attended a Halloween party on Friday night, dressed up as some of the inmates from the show. She decided to portray one of the show’s most eccentric characters, Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren, which is played by actress Uzo Aduba.
To get the look, the Safe Haven star donned an orange jumpsuit (Crazy Eyes actually wears a Khaki jumpsuit), some crazy hairdo, and an ID tag to indicate who she was. But what stirred up controversy was the fact that she was wearing blackface (by using bronzer to darken her skin color). Many were not pleased with her costume choice and said it was disrespectful and offensive.
In response to the criticism, Hough took to her Twitter account to apologize for her choice in costume:
“I am a huge fan of the show Orange Is The New black, actress Uzo Aduba, and the character she has created. It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize.”
While Hough didn’t mean to offend anyone, there was some poor judgment on her part especially being in the public eye.
