The hollow might be sleepy, but business has certainly woken up.
The real-life village of Sleepy Hollow (formerly North Tarrytown) has seen a business boom this Halloween in connection to Fox’s hot new show about the Headless Horseman and Ichabod Crane.
The show does take some liberties with Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Ichabod Crane, instead of being the skinny, superstitious schoolteacher of the 1819 short story, is rather more attractive. He’s also been shuttled two and a half centuries forward in time where he encounters the Headless Horseman, who is a mercenary who he decapitated during the American Revolutionary war.
Crane also copes with some culture shock, and is awed by the sheer amount of Starbucks locations. The show aired Sept. 16, giving it enough time to grow a fan base and get excitement brewing.
Several areas in Sleepy Hollow, which lies 25 miles away from New York City, are featured in Irving’s story, and the new show has reportedly brought a renewed interest to the tale and to the town.
The village has needed it. Despite changing their name officially to Sleepy Hollow in 1996, a relocation of General Motors reportedly hit the village hard, and it’s residents turned to tourism to stay afloat.
As Sleepy Hollow has already been picked up for a second season by Fox, villagers of Sleepy Hollow will have to see how much the show will continue to impact business.
