The life of musician and jazz pioneer, Miles Davis, is coming to the silver screen in a must-see biopic titled, Kill The Trumpet Player. To be helmed by Don Cheadle — who will be portraying the iconic trumpet player, as well — the film will be Cheadle’s directorial debut and will also star Ewan McGregor and Zoe Saldana.
McGregor will portray a Rolling Stone journalist who conspires with Davis as he ventured outside his “silent” period and attempts to steal his music back, according to Digital Spy.
Cheadle describes the project as an attempt to “kill the [term] biopic.”
“This film won’t try to give a broad overview of Davis’s life and give short shrift to this man’s story,” he explains. “For us as creative people, the time of his life that was most interesting was the five years when he wasn’t playing, when he was silent.
“What was going on in his mind? And how did he come out of it and return to music?”
“Don is one of our generation’s greatest actors, and this is the role he was born to play,” says BiFrost principal Daniel Wagner in a statement, via USA Today. “His take on the conventional biopic of one of music’s most celebrated icons is cinematic ‘jazz’ and too unique to resist. It fits naturally with BiFrost’s commitment to support talent and their passion projects, so we are thrilled to work with Don on his feature directorial debut.”
To shed some light on Davis’ impact on the music industry, his 1959 record Kind of Blue remains the top-selling jazz album of all time. It is often credited as setting in motion the early “cool jazz” movement. Over the years, Davis collaborated with such artists as Charlie Parker, Herbie Hancock and Public Image Ltd. Other notable records that helped shape the industry are Sketches of Spain and In a Silent Way. Davis passed away in 1991 at the age of 65.
