Demi Lovato Speaks Out About Miley Cyrus’ Twerktastic Image

Demi Lovato should know more than anyone what it means to grow up in the Disney bubble to then later branch out into mainstream Top 40. Of course, the name on everyone’s tongue these days is Miley Cyrus, who also got her start on the hugely success Disney-produced Hannah Montana series.
In a new interview with Katie Couric, set to air on Wednesday (Nov. 19), Demi weighs in on the ongoing Miley-twerking saga. “I think she knows what she’s doing. A lot of artists take that route, of shock value, and that’s totally fine and that’s great, but she has such an incredible voice that’s overshadowed by some of the things that she’s doing,” Demi says.
“It’s her journey. She’s having fun. She’s being who she is,” the pop singer adds, noting that she’s been friends with Miley since she was 14. “We’ll always love her.”
At a very young age, Miley hit TV screens across America as the adorably precocious teen pop sensation known as Hannah Montana, cultivating an almost cult-like following with both teens and parents alike.
The singer’s recent antics (and foam finger-waving) at the VMAs, alongside “Blurred Lines” crooner Robin Thicke, has those same parents up in arms. Continual criticisms have been hurled at the star, and Demi says enough is enough. “I think that the world kind of needs to get over the fact that she was Hannah Montana when she was 16 or whatever,” she blasts.
“Same thing with me — I guess my transition was a little easier because I went straight to rehab. I didn’t twerk, I just went to rehab,” Demi quips. She then goes on, “But nobody knows her and nobody really knows who I am and same with Selena [Gomez] and Jonas [Brothers] and everybody who’s grown up in front of the public eye.”
“We’re adults now… I’m nowhere near the same person I was when I was 15 or 16 — thank God. But I’ve learned a lot and I’ve grown up and we’re all in the process of doing that, so go a little easy on us, America.”
