The Doctor Takes Over Google For The 50th Anniversary

Doctor Who fans who popped on to world’s most popular search engine on Nov. 22 were rendered unproductive for the day as they were met with arguably one of the most exciting Doodles to date.

After 4000 Whovians signed a petition for Google to create a Doodle commemorating the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, Google launched an interactive, multi-level Doodle game that incorporates all 11 of the Doctors, in, according to The Guardian, is “one of the biggest the company has ever produced”.

In what is quickly becoming known as the “Whodle,” the Doctor (you get to select which Doctor you want to start as) must retrieve the letters that spell out Google while avoiding extermination by Dalek. Every time you die (to every Whovian’s delight) you regenerate into the next incarnation of the Doctor.

The Doodle seems like a massive undertaking, but it is impressively only the work of five people, one of which, Matthew Cruickshank, is a Brit who has worked as a full-time Doodle creator for over a year (Yes, that is an actual job, and we’re betting a whole bunch of you are seriously wondering how you would get into that position).

The Doodle does feature sound bites from the show, including the iconic Tardis whoosh, and does not feature future Doctors John Hurt as the War Doctor and Peter Capaldi as Twelve.

The Whodle took the internet by storm, but is not on the American Google, in respect of the 50th anniversary of the death of JFK. The first episode aired the day after John F. Kennedy’s assassination.

Whovians will have the Whodle to tide them over until Nov. 23, when the 50th anniversary is simulcast across the globe.
