94 countries. 6 continents. No, not the bragging rights of a hardcore gap year traveller, but the record breaking broadcast of the Doctor Who 50th anniversary special, “The Day of the Doctor;” officially the largest ever simulcast of a TV drama.
The cast and crew of Doctor Who heard of the Guinness World Record breaking accomplishment earlier today at 50th Anniversary celebrations being held at London’s ExCel Centre. The award was presented at a lunchtime panel today, with stars including Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman, and showrunner Steven Moffat in attendance.
Moffat said of the achievement: “For years the Doctor has been stopping everyone else from conquering the world. Now, just to show off, he’s gone and done it himself!”
The Doctor may have had a little help from a few friends, with a global campaign from BBC Worldwide ensuring his special day was broadcast not only on the small screen, but also on the silver screen. The Day of the Doctor in 3D was screened in 1500 cinemas around the world, with thousands of fans flocking to sold out shows.
The CEO of BBC Worldwide, Tim Davie, described the feat as “unprecedented in broadcast history,” and noted with pride: “If there was any doubt that Doctor Who is one of the world’s biggest TV shows, this award should put that argument to rest – and how fitting for it to receive such an accolade in its 50th year.”
As Guinness World Records Editor in Chief, Craig Glenday said: “Who else but the time-twisting Doctor could appear in 94 countries at once?!”
