We brought you the news a few days ago that Monty Python were making plans to reunite for a one off stage show. Tickets for the July 1 event went on sale this morning and fans quickly snatched up the 14,500 tickets that were available and promptly sold out the event… In 43.5 seconds!
A spokesman for the group said that due to the overwhelming popularity and demand, an additional four shows had immediately gone on sale. Those extra dates, sold out within 55 minutes.
In a statement released by Eric Idle, the legendary comedy veteran said “It’s totally amazing. I don’t think we realised quite how much Python is loved around the world”
“We look forward to paying off Terry Jones’ mortgage soon.” Idle joked, echoing Jones’ own statement earlier in the week “I hope it makes us a lot of money. I hope to be able to pay off my mortgage!”
Promoters are refusing to say whether a world-wide tour is now a possibility given the huge demand already shown in the U.K. “We have no further comment for now” were the official words given to the Australian Associated Press (AAP).
However last week when prompted about the idea of The Pythons visiting Australia, Terry Jones, who will direct the show said “Yes, of course, I love Australia” because the Sydney Opera House was “one of the finest places to play.” Fellow Python John Cleese was less than enthused about travelling Down Under “The only problem with Australia is there are planets closer than that.”
Michael Palin told reporters that the 2014 shows would be named “One down, five to go” but has confirmed that “Two down, four to go” is ready, just in case.
