“The Day of the Doctor” has come and gone. BBC One’s 50th Anniversary Doctor Who tribute entertained 10.2 million dedicated Whovians on Sunday night.

Sunday was also the last day of the Anniversary celebration at London’s ExCel.

Doctor Who’s executive producer Steven Moffat opened up about The Doctor’s regeneration limit at the event on Saturday, Digital Spy reports.

Moffat said, “He has no more called himself the Eleventh Doctor than he would call himself Matt Smith. The Doctor doesn’t know off the top of his head [what number he is]. If you worry about such things, and I do, then I specifically said John Hurt’s Doctor doesn’t use the title. [Matt Smith’s Doctor] is in his twelfth body but he’s the Eleventh Doctor, however there is no such character as the Eleventh Doctor—he’s just the Doctor, that’s what he calls himself.”

When asked about the regeneration limit–an aspect of the show introduced in Tom Baker’s story The Deadly Assassin during the fourteenth season—Moffat said that Paul McGann and John Hurt aren’t the same incarnation, because the former turned into the latter.

“He used up another regeneration and I expect he’ll be in trouble shortly—you can’t break rules laid down in The Deadly Assassin,” Moffat added.

Here’s a plot twist for Whovians to sort out.

Moffat told the Radio Times that Matt Smith’s doctor is actually the thirteenth regeneration.

According to the rules of regeneration, the thirteenth regeneration is the last. In other words, the end of Smith should mean the end of Doctor Who.

Everyone expected Peter Capaldi to be the Twelfth Doctor and the thirteenth regeneration with the addition of the War Doctor. He is supposed to make an appearance in December.

“So if the Doctor can never change again, what’s Peter Capaldi doing in the Christmas special?” Moffat asked.

Yes, he did just ask a question that only he can answer.

Stay tuned, Whovians.
