Fans were left feeling that they’d made the jump into hyperspace earlier this month when it was announced that the release date of Star Wars Episode VII had been delayed. As with the previous six films in the franchise, Episode VII was initially scheduled for a summer release in 2015. However, it has now been pushed back to December 18, 2015.

Though the delay has meant that fans have that much longer to wait and see JJ Abrams take on the universe, the director himself has said that the film is now in “an infinitely better situation”. Now surely that is something fans should be happy about.

Speaking to MTV earlier this week, he revealed that “the new release date is a huge improvement”. The initial summer 2015 release date was first thrown around before Abrams had even signed onto the project. Abrams said that though he can “understand” why they did that at the time, “it didn’t necessarily have anything to do with the reality of where anything was creatively”.

Abrams further added, “I think that it’s a hugely important thing that [the creative process] come first. A release date is great, but you have to release something great”.

That news should further cement to fans that Abrams was the right person for the job of forging Star Wars into the future. A self-confessed Star Wars fanboy, Abrams has repeatedly stated that he wants to create a quality movie that goes back to basics of the first trilogy.

Casting is underway for the movie with filming due to begin in London early in the new year.
