With the cinema release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug in less than a fortnight, fans knew that it wouldn’t be long before Air New Zealand released its Desolation of Smaug painted plane. The big question, was who would appear on the side of the Boeing? Previous recipients to get their own plane include Frodo for The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring, Aragorn and Arwen for The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and the dwarves for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Given the title of the film, it should come as no surprise when Air New Zealand revealed the plane today.
Along the side of a Boeing 777-3000ER is the first full image of the dragon star of the upcoming film, Smaug (voiced in the film by Benedict Cumberbatch). As part of the unveiling, Air New Zealand has also released a timelapse video showing the paintwork being carried out.
The second film in the trilogy picks up from An Unexpected Journey and sees the hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) continue to assist the dwarves in retaking their kingdom from the dragon.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is in cinemas around the world on December 13 and in Australia on December 26.
