Katy Perry Shares More About The Trip That Changed Her Life

Katy Perry is more than just a chart-topping enchantress. She has a heart as big and loud as her most memorable hits. She “roars,” so to speak, and that became evident earlier this year when she went on a goodwill mission to Madagascar, a trip she reveals — in a new interview for ABC News‘ series Newsmakers — that “continues to change me and reshape my thinking.”

“Everyone should take this kind of trip. It popped my bubble for sure,” the singer, who was announced as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador on Tuesday (Dec. 3), tells reporter Dan Kloeffler.

One thing that snapped everything into focus for Perry was realizing that the young children she met had never heard her music. In fact, no one knew who she was. She shares, “When I’m in the field with UNICEF, no one is my fan. They don’t even know who I am. They just see a person coming to help them, to spread the love and joy that UNICEF has.”

The aspect of the trip that really hit home for the pop diva is the “love that they have for each other,” she notes, “that’s not based on material possessions, that’s not based on social status, that’s not based on Instagram likes because there are no Instagram likes. It’s incredible that they are trading this unconditional love of sorts.”

Perry was able to take that life-changing journey and use it for her latest hit, “Unconditionally,” lifted from her no. 1 album Prism. She explains, “‘Unconditionally’ was inspired by two things: It’s inspired by the love I have for someone. And it’s inspired by the trip I took and the unconditional love I do feel for these kids and that I see them exchange with each other.”

She takes it a step further into the creative process for the album as a whole, “I kind of think that my vulnerability is my strength. I think that when I share from a pure place, from an honest place, that people relate to those lyrics more. That’s what I desire to be, is authentic and genuine.”

ABC News‘ Luis A. Yordan also contributed in the reporting of this episode.
