With the finale show of The Voice coming up next week (can you believe it!?), I wanted to take a minute to review some my favorite performances from Top 3 contender, Will Champlin. Throughout the competition, Will has managed to capture the American audience, find his niche, and outlast some of the season’s early frontrunners to secure a well-deserved spot in the finale. Will knows who he is as an artist; he knows his style, he knows what songs work for him, he knows music. Now let’s take a look at my top 3 performances from Will and just how he’s used his musical prowess to topple his fellow competitors.
3. Secrets
In the first live show, The Voice set the stage to trim the crop of singers from 20 to 12. With two members from each team heading home, the stakes were high. Will went with One Republic’s “Secrets,” and his bluesy rendition pushed him into the next leg of the competition. Team Adam ended up losing Grey and Preston Pohl for reasons that I believe come down to song choice and believability. Where Will owned his performance from start to finish, both Grey and Preston struggled to connect with the energy of their songs and just didn’t rise to the same level as the rest of the pack.

2. Love Me Again
This was a toss-up for me. Will’s version of “A Change Is Gonna Come” was also one of my favorite performances, but the energy and showmanship he displayed in this performance was solid. Though it wasn’t one of the stand-out performances of that specific night, it was superior to weak offerings from Austin Jenckes and Kat Robichaud, who eventually were sent home. Once again, song choice! I don’t understand why the judges and the contestants pick songs that make no sense. Though Will’s song may not have made perfect sense either, he at least knocked it out of the park.

1. At Last
Will pummeled the competition with his rendition of Etta James’ “At Last,” sending him into the iTunes Top Ten and securing a spot in the show. While other frontrunners took risks that proved a little less than stellar; Will’s risky move to do such a huge song by a female artist proved to be his shining moment. With a field of eight, there was really no chance Will would be heading home, and it ended up being Caroline Pennell and Ray Boudreaux who left the competition. Not that either one of their performances were terrible, but they weren’t nearly as memorable as “At Last;” and, hey, I’m still watching that performance…you should too:

Will is in good company in the Top 3 with Tessanne Chin and Jacquie Lee. With the finale show coming up next week, I’m hoping Will has another “At Last” moment that can push him ahead of the ladies!
