The Directors Guild of America (DGA) have announced that Glee star Jane Lynch will host the 66th Annual DGA Awards.

DGA president Paris Barclay made the announcement saying, “We are thrilled to welcome Jane Lynch as host of the DGA Awards for the very first time. I have known Jane for years, and have envied her quick wit – and her extraordinary height. She always makes the job of directing her a joy, and I look forward to her helping us honor the year’s best in film and television.”

Lynch takes over from Kelsey Grammer who hosted the ceremony for the past two years. He in turn inherited the job from Carl Reiner who emceed the event for an astounding 23 years.

The awards recognise excellence in feature films, television, documentary, television and commercials throughout the year and have traditionally been seen as an indicator of who will go on to receive the Best Director award at the Oscars. In fact, only seven times in the 65 year history of the DGA’s has the Feature Film winner not gone on to win the Academy Award for that year.

While hosting the DGA’s may be a first for Jane, she is certainly no stranger to the task of leading an awards show, having previously fronted the 63rd Annual Primetime Emmy’s in 2011.

Nominations for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film will be announced on January 7, 2014 while nominations for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Television and Commercials will be announced on January 9, 2014; and nominations for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentaries will be announced on January 13, 2014.

The awards are presented in a non televised event on January 25, 2014, at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles.
