Prepare to witness the most breathtaking flash mob recorded to date.
Woolworths, a chain store with a global reach spanning all the way to South Africa, orchestrated a flash mob in honor of the late Nelson Mandela.
Woolworths recruited the Soweto Gospel Choir, and deposited the choir’s members into the store disguised as employees and shoppers. What then ensued is nothing short of magic.
Though it was in a language not my own, I have never been more moved by something in my life. The song they sing was written during Mandela’s captivity, and was a plea for his freedom.
Below is a translation of the lyrics, followed by the video of the tribute to one of world’s most revered activists. Sit back, relax, and prepare for some goosebumps.
Asimbonanga [we have not seen him]
Asimbonang’ uMandela thina [we have not seen Mandela]
Laph’ekhona [in the place where he is]
Laph’ehleli khona [in the place where he is kept]
Asimbonanga
Asimbonang ‘umfowethu thina [we have not seen our brother]
Laph’ekhona [in the place where he is]
Laph’wafela khona [in the place where he died]
Sithi: Hey, wena [We say: hey, you]
Hey, wena nawe [Hey, you and you]
Siyofika nini la’ siyakhona [when will we arrive at our destination]
