Not all actors stayed on the straight and narrow path before they hit it big. The life of a celebrity can be a grueling experience. Bradley Cooper, star of Alias and soon to be released film American Hustle, opened up to GQ magazine.
In their January issue, he described his battle with drugs, alcohol, and how he nearly hit rock bottom.
When his role on Alias got downsized in 2002, the actor had a lot of free time on his hands.
“I would only work three days a week. And then for the second season, I got even more sidelined. I was like, ‘Ugh.’ And then next thing you know, I was like, ‘I want to f***ing kill myself.’”
Even after asking JJ Abrams, the writer of Alias, to take him out of the show, finding other gigs proved harder than Cooper imagined.
“At some point, you have to come to terms with ‘The business just doesn’t want you’, you know what I mean?”
Cooper also admits to his use of alcohol and drugs in the earlier 2000s. This use, he claims, greatly impaired his work and social relations.
“If I continued it, I was really going to sabotage my whole life. I think work was getting f***ed up. The one thing that I’ve learned in life is the best thing I can do is embrace who I am and then do that to the fullest extent, and then whatever happens, happens. The more steps I do to not do that, the farther I am away from fulfilling any potential I would have.”
Better to figure all of that out sooner rather than later! Cooper finally landed a spot on The Hangover in 2009, giving him a chance to get recognized outside of television. Since this film, he’s gone on to star in others, including The Hangover 2.
Early 2013 found him nominated for an Oscar for his role in Silver Linings Playbook, and folks are saying that he might get another sooner rather than later.
His new film American Hustle, which is receiving a lot of love from the critics, premiered in New York this past Sunday and will hit theatres on December 20 in the US, Canada, and in London; the rest of the UK will get to see it on January 1.
