It’s official! Robin Thicke has been named the “Sexist of the Year” by a coalition formed of woman’s groups.
This title comes with little surprise, as Thicke’s single “Blurred Lines” grew a multitude of attention this past year for his suggestive themes about rape and uncanny portrayal of nude women in his music video.
The poll was carried out by the End Violence Against Women Coalition, a coalition made up of 60 woman’s rights groups.
Sarah Green, a member of the coalition, stated: “Our heartfelt congratulations to a worthy winner Robin Thicke for both his concerted sexist efforts, and in the end the platform he created for rejection of the use of women as objects to promote mediocre pop.”
For gaining the title, the coalition will award Thicke with a voucher to download Aretha Franklin’s song “Respect.”
Thicke, an in earlier interview with GQ, responded to criticisms about “Blurred Lines” saying: “People say, ‘Hey, do you think this is degrading to women?’ I’m like, ‘Of course it is. What a pleasure it is to degrade a woman. I’ve never gotten to do that before’.”
The song’s lyrics and his justification for them have definitely earned him this year’s title. Thicke’s recognition will hopefully inspire him to think differently about how he treats women in the future.
“Sexism might be de rigueur for some music industry ‘creatives’,” Sarah Green commented. “But the times they are a-changin’.”
