They always said the South would rise again, and it appears Southerners in North Carolina are rising to their feet in support of their first ever same-sex marriage celebration!

Army Maj. Daniel Toven and his husband Johnathan Taylor celebrated with about 100 family and friends at North Carolina’s top military base Fort Bragg, following their civil union ceremony. The couple were officially married back in August in Washington D.C., as same sex marriage is not yet recognized in North Carolina.

In attendance was Lt. Col. Heather Mack “who fought to have her wife (Ashley Broadway) admitted to the Fort Bragg Officers’ Spouses Club,” reports Out Magazine.  Guests also included Staff Sgt. Tracy Johnson who is also the first same-sex war widow in the U.S. military.

“The Rev. Harry Abernathy conducted an Episcopal ritual of blessing, similar to a marriage ceremony, for Toven and Taylor at Fort Bragg’s chapel,” reports The Fayetteville Observer. The Reverend also noted during the ceremony that the couple’s relationship “was a sign of God’s love.”

Congratulations Maj. Daniel and Johnathan Toven!
