Hugh Jackman Withdraws From Broadway’s Houdini

With the number of projects Hugh Jackman has officially signed onto and been rumoured to be involved in for the next year or two, it comes as no surprise that a few are not going to eventuate. The most recent project to fall to the wayside is the Broadway musical about Harry Houdini.

Back in September Jackman revealed that he would be making a decision in the next few months about whether he would be able to commit to star as the iconic illusionist in the musical which is set to debut in 2014. Now it appears that he has made a decision and that he will be unable to participate due to “scheduling conflicts”.

In a statement, Jackman said that he “wasn’t able to commit to the time this role will require”. He added, “I have tremendous respect and admiration for the creative team and I wish everyone the best. I know they’re well on their way to making something extraordinary.”

The show’s producer Scott Sanders spoke of how Jackman had been “terrific to have on this part of our journey”. He also confirmed that though Jackman had left, the production was still moving ahead. “We will continue to move forward with our remarkable creative team as they craft this ambitious new musical,” he said.

The musical has been in the works since 2008. Jackman is not the first to have left the production, with writers/composers Danny Elfman, Aaron Sorkin and Stephan Schwartz all having been attached to the project over its lifetime. Tony Award-winner David Ives (Venus in Fur) is currently writing the script after The West Wing’s Sorkin departed in January.

At present the production is still slated for a 2014 premiere. However, with no Houdini and the script still being finalised, it is unclear whether this will be possible.
