While the rest of the world were able to return to Middle Earth over a fortnight ago when it was released in most sectors on December 13, Australians have had to wait until yesterday (December 26) to see the latest installation of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit. And see it they did.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opened with an estimated $4.9 million. This makes the film the second-largest opening ever in Australia. It comes in behind its predecessor, last year’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
So far the film has opened in 57 markets and is fast approaching the $450 million mark.
In the US, Smaug was the top grossing film for Christmas Day trade. With Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street coming in a close second.
