Benedict Cumberbatch has revealed that people still have difficulty pronouncing his name.
In an interview with The Mirror, Cumberbatch expressed the conflict that comes with having an unusual name.
“Some people don’t understand my name. Some people think it is an STD, but I don’t think that is what my parents were thinking about when they christened me,” he joked.
Along with the occasional awkwardness of baring his name, he also explained a rather embarrassing situation he comes across when people mention his mother, actress Wanda Ventham.

“I’ve been trapped with men in elevators who say to me, ‘Oh… I really used to like your mom. She’s really hot’,” he mentioned. “I don’t know what to say. If I say, ‘No, she’s not’, that is really insulting to my mother, and if I say she is, it seems very wrong. She is smokin’, I guess.”
Cumberbatch will be ringing in the New Year with two great projects so far. He will play Alan Turing in the upcoming 2014 film The Imitation Game, and will be starring in the long anticipated third season of Sherlock returning to BBC One on January 1.
