There have recently been some rumors that the smash-hit period drama, Downton Abbey, may meet its end after next season. Rumors that have depressed loyal fans greatly.

However, Executive Producer Gareth Neame is here to debunk those nasty little rumors by giving us loyal Downton worshipers hope of a long and healthy tenure.

In an interview with AFP, Neame stated that, “It won’t go on forever. No show does. [But] the show will live to an age of somewhere between five and 10 years.” TEN YEARS?! That’s what I’m talking about!

Downton originally aired in September of 2010, meaning that it could potentially run all the way to 2020, if they’re really going for that ten-year run.

Not so fast! Neame also stated that ending the series would ultimately come down to a creative decision. “Clearly the show is an economic success. But to me, the more important thing is to make sure it is well-formed, comes to an end at the right time, and is not lured into the usual thing of trying to keep something going past its time.” I can certainly appreciate that.

Something that Neame and the rest of Downton’s creative team never expected was the incredible global success of the show, particularly in the US and Spain.

“I was hopeful that we would have the usual 50-plus, upscale, anglophile American audience, but I didn’t know that we would become such a mainstream hit. Why we should be the most popular non-Spanish program in Spain, I don’t know.”

The fourth season of Downton Abbey just premiered in the US on Sunday; but it has been officially wrapped in the UK since November (Christmas Day special notwithstanding).
