David Fincher’s latest film project, the adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s novel Gone Girl, will have a different ending than the book.

This was confirmed by Flynn herself in an interview with Entertainment Weekly:

“Ben [Affleck] was so shocked by it. He would say, ‘This is a whole new third act! She literally threw that third act out and started from scratch’”.

She also explained why she took that decision: “There was something thrilling about taking this piece of work that I’d spent about two years painstakingly putting together with all its eight million LEGO pieces and take a hammer to it and bash it apart and reassemble it into a movie”.

The movie, starring Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris and Tyler Perry tells the story Nick and Amy, two magazine writers whose marriage turns toxic after Amy vanishes on their fifth wedding anniversary and Nick becomes the prime suspect.

Gone Girl will be released on October 3 in both the US and the UK.
