On last Monday’s episode of How I Met Your Mother, Jason Segel’s character, Marshall, visits Shanghai where he encounters the asian versions of his friends.
The accent, make-up, costumes and use of the term “yellowface” created controversy on social networks, with viewers taking twitter to express their discontent with the hashtag “#HowIMetYourRacism”.
Co-creator Carter Bays took to twitter to release an apology, stating he and fellow showrunner Craig Thomas are “deeply sorry” for the any offence caused:

But along the way we offended people. We're deeply sorry, and we’re grateful to everyone who spoke up to make us aware of it.

We try to make a show that's universal, that anyone can watch and enjoy. We fell short of that this week, and feel terrible about it.

How I Met Your Mother is in the middle of it’s ninth and final season, with the final episode due to air on March 31 on CBS.
