Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult are set to star in Equals, an updated version of the 1956 film 1984, which will directed by Drake Doremus. 1984 was a film based on the famous dystopian novel by George Orwell, written in 1949, portraying a repressed futuristic society, set in the year 1984.

Stewart and Hoult will be playing lovers in Equals, and according to Stewart, “It’s a love story of epic, epic, epic proportion.” When speaking about the film to The AP, she said: “I can’t believe I agreed to do it. I’m terrified of it. Though it’s a movie with a really basic concept, it’s overtly ambitious.”

She’s so terrified in fact, that she did attempt to turn it down, adding: “I trust Drake’s process and I know we will do something really natural and real,” said Stewart. “But I told Drake, ‘Don’t expect that I am going to be able to do this. It’s too hard.’ But he wouldn’t take ‘no’ for an answer. I’ve given directors disclaimers before, but never this much.”

As anyone who has read Orwell’s novel will know, the love story contained within 1984 is a huge aspect of the book. This is similar to the main themes in Equals; Stewart continued to describe the film, saying “things go wrong because you can’t deny the humanity in everyone. It’s the most devastating story.”

Equals is set to start filming later this year. Stewart will be publicising Peter Sattler’s Camp X-Ray this weekend at the Sundance Film Festival.
