Whether you’re an ardent Tom Hiddleston fan, like myself, or have simply seen him portray Loki in Paramount Picture’s Thor. You will recognize the British thespians way with words.
With a background in Shakespearian plays such as Othello and Cymbeline, it is no surprise that Hiddleston has been selling out Donmar Warehouses production of Coriolanus where he plays Coriolanus. Alongside his stage work with Shakespeare, Hiddleston has also appeared in the small screen versions of Henry IV and Henry V. With a resume like that, I believe it is safe to say that Tom Hiddleston knows the Bard.
It is this love for Shakespeare that, according to Hiddleston, helped shape the character of Loki and made it one of the best experiences of his life saying “The first day of filming on the Avengers was definitely one of the great moments of my life; a bunch of fully grown adults, most of whom were stonking great movie stars, all pointing and laughing at each other.” Hiddleston went on to say how filming can take you “into another world, and when you come out of it, you are sitting at home with a cup of tea and a biscuit and you’re thinking to yourself, ‘we’ll, that was weird. Fun, but weird.”
Thor director Kenneth Branagh convinced Hiddleston to audition for the role of Loki soon after he discovered he had received the job of director for the movie. At this time, Branagh and Hiddleston were both starring in Donmar Warehouses Inavov. Hiddleston recalls “We made Loki out of Shakespearean characters. We talked about King Lear with its two brothers, Macbeth with his ambition and the way Iago spins every situation for self-interest.” He also stated “Without doubt, Kenneth Branagh has been my inspiration – there is no way I would be where I am today without him.”
It is without a doubt, the Shakespearian inspired Loki has become a worldwide sensation leaving fans begging for “more Loki” in any way possible but mostly in the form of a spin-off movie. So hats of to Hiddleston and Branagh for pleasing your Shakespeare fans as well as creating a spectacular character.
