Woody Allen has released a statement following his adopted daughter Dylan Farrow’s open letter in the New York Times. She wrote that Allen sexually abused her when she was just 7 years old.
“Mr. Allen has read the article and found it untrue and disgraceful. He will be responding very soon,” Allen’s publicist, Leslee Dart, said in a statement.
According to BBC News, Dart also reminded people that “a thorough investigation was conducted by court-appointed independent experts…The experts concluded there was no credible evidence of molestation; that Dylan Farrow had an inability to distinguish between fantasy and reality; and that Dylan Farrow had likely been coached by her mother Mia Farrow.”
As we previously reported, Dylan Farrow wrote a column for The New York Times about the abuse, saying: “These things happened so often, so routinely, so skilfully hidden from a mother that would have protected me had she known, that I thought it was normal. I thought this was how fathers doted on their daughters. But what he did to me in the attic felt different.”
The piece was released just as Allen’s latest film Blue Jasmine, which stars Cate Blanchett, was nominated for an Oscar.
Blanchett responded to the piece, saying: “It’s obviously been a long and painful situation for the family and I hope they find some resolution and peace.”
The allegations first surfaced shortly after Allen broke up with Mia Farrow in 1992, after revelations that Allen had been having an affair with Farrow’s adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn.
Allen released a statement after those allegations, saying they were “an unconscionable and gruesomely damaging manipulation of innocent children for vindictive and self-serving motives.”
