Bye bye birdie!

Dong Nguyen, creator of hit mobile game Flappy Bird, has tweeted that he will be taking down the addictive and infamous game tomorrow.

“I am sorry ‘Flappy Bird’ users, 22 hours from now, I will take ‘Flappy Bird’ down. I cannot take this anymore”, Nguyen tweeted a few hours ago.

The game has gained notoriety in a short span of time for its simple premise and frustrating gameplay, in which a player taps the screen to get a bird through a series of pipes.

Sounds easy enough right?  Yet it’s extremely difficult to even get a score of 5.

The game has been downloaded more than 50 million times, with more than 70,000 reviews in the App Store.

Reactions to this development ranged from: “The termination of Flappy Bird is the single greatest action ever taken to avert mass insanity” (@RyanLMcElveen) to “Flappy bird is being taken down tomorrow??? what will I do with my life?” (@brinamorgan3).

Nguyen tweeted “It is not anything related to legal issues. I just cannot keep it anymore”, referencing the controversy the game created due to its resemblance to the popular Super Mario Bros. video games.

There is also speculation that the removal of the game stems from negative attention Nguyen has received as a result of the game’s popularity.

Don’t feel too bad for him though.

In an interview with The Verge, Nguyen revealed that the game earned an average of $50,000 a day from ad revenue.
