Mary Helen Sears of Houghton County, and the elected vice chair of the Michigan Republican Party’s 1st District, posted on the Schoolcraft County GOP website last March, claiming that homosexuality is a Satanic perversion and that gays should be “purged” from the GOP.
In her post, Sears claims that “Satan uses homosexuality to attack the living space of the Holy Spirit” and supports the idea that Republicans “should be purging this perversion and send them to a party with a much bigger tent.”
After the resignation of Dave Agema’s Michigan co-chair on the RNC, U.S. Senate candidate Terri Lynn Land to focus on her campaign, the state GOP must choose a woman to take Land’s position under the party rules. Sears is now running for that position.
“If the GOP continues down this trend and stand for perversions and the daily social fad…The GOP will be truly dead and Satan will have had his day,” wrote Sears.
She alleged that Communist college professors were teaching the youth and that Charles Darwin’s evolutionary theory “gave rise to Hitler’s Third Reich, Mussolini’s Italy and Stalin’s Russia.”
Some Michigan Republicans may think that Sears’ views are exaggerated, but one GOP group, the Delta County Republican Party, has taken to social media to voice fear that a pro-gay agenda is taking over the Michigan Republican Party.
