After watching Russia’s ice dance team shimmy away with a gold medal, President Vladimir Putin decided to celebrate by visiting the Holland Heineken House on Sunday night. Ireen Wust, openly gay Dutch speedskater, was also there celebrating her gold medal win in the 3,000 meter women’s speedskate.
Could be a tad bit awkward, right? Wrong!
Wust says, “I got a cuddle from him. He congratulated me and asked if everything was OK in Russia.”
This act “comes after months of international outrage” at Putin’s anti-gay agenda, which includes a law that bans promoting homosexual acts around minors. After fear for openly gay athletes competing in the Sochi Olympics, it looks like Putin’s embrace of Wust will allow the rest of the world to breathe a sigh of relief.
What did Putin have to say about his visit to the party? “Fantastic. Very good. Good people and good results… good party.”
