Country and alt singer k.d. Lang recently sat down with the AP to talk about her upcoming Broadway debut…and she is just as surprised to find herself on Broadway as many of her fans are.
The Grammy award winner, best known for her cover of “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen and her hit song “Constant Craving” said this about being on Broadway, “It is outside my comfort zone. It is something that I never thought I’d be doing.”
Lang will star in the show, “After Midnight,” which currently features Fantasia Barrino. Barrino’s run is over, however, and Lang will start on Tuesday, February 10th.
”After Midnight” is a show about jazz legend Duke Ellington and focuses on the time he spent at the famed Cotton Club in New York City. The show will spotlight Lang singing well-known jazz songs including “Stormy Weather” and “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love” among others.
During her time sitting with the AP, Lang, a four time Grammy winner, shared a number of thoughts about her Broadway debut. Among them is the fact that she passed on the project the first time she was asked to do it. She says:
“I [passed] the first time they asked. I said, ‘No’ because I’m kind of stuck in my ways. I do what I do. But then they came back to me, and I had thought about it a lot and came to the conclusion that you can’t turn it down.”
She went on to say, “I was concerned that I had to act or that I had to perform in a way. To me, the most important thing is diving into the emotional narrative of the song. To me, that’s everything.”
Though Lang is looking forward to her run in “After Midnight,” which will conclude on March 9th, she has no plans at this time to work on any other Broadway shows.
“It’s not who I am. I mean, I may be completely singing — pardon the pun — a different tune after this experience, but up this point, no. I would say not.”
Though we might not see Lang on the Broadway stage again, fans hope to see the 52 year old back behind her guitar. As for the future, Lang had this to say, “I may even retire after this. I don’t know. I honestly have no idea.”.
