British music magazine NME (New Musical Express) took the difficult challenge of listing the top 500 songs of all time.
Yes, you read that correctly: top 500 songs of all time.
Naturally, this list has caused debate as the method to compile these songs was asking NME writers past and present to submit a list of their top 50 songs and combine these with lists of NME’s top 50 tracks of the year; and (of course) not everyone agrees with it.
Last year’s list was the top 500 albums of all time, with The Smiths’ The Queen is Dead as number 1.
But to make it easier, here are the top 20 songs of all time according to NME:
20. Girls & Boys – Blur.
19. Heart of Glass – Blondie.
18. Hey Ya! – Outkast.
17. A Day in the Life – The Beatles.
16. Seven Nation Army – The White Stripes.
15. Heroes – David Bowie.
14. God Only Knows – The Beach Boys.
13. Live Forever – Oasis.
12. There is a Light That Never Goes Out – The Smiths.
11. Eleanor Rigby – The Beatles.
10. Good Vibrations – The Beach Boys.
9. Be My Baby – The Ronettes.
8. Blue Monday – New Order.
7. I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor – Arctic Monkeys.
